Mary had a little lamb?

It’s well known that fairytales and nursery rhymes we have heard and grown up with, which have no doubt shaped our love of stories and understanding of the world, they were based on teaching children about dangers of the world. Nowadays, of course, they are sugar coated.

I like taking an idea commonly held sometimes and see if I can twist it, add an element of the dark, or uneasiness to it. Today, this rhyme popped in my head. So, in celebrating the fact that my short horror film about clowns and kids, The Legacy, is currently seeking love and vote at the 2018 LA Horror Shorts Film Festival Audience Awards, I thought I’d twist ‘Mary had a little lamb’ or try.

If you’d like to watch The Legacy, please click on the link and you’ll be taken there, where little horrors await. But for now, here is my take on the classic.

Had Mary a Lamb

with fleece as white as snow,

that everywhere that Mary went

this Lamb was sure to go?

Went to school it did one day

against the rules as said,

and lingered all day, it did at bay,

watching Mary play?

When the day at school ended,

the Lamb bah-ed joyously as Mary came,

little did Mary know what had just been said,

the Lamb as white as snow…

…as white as snow, as white as…ghost

…followed her home, like everyday.

…little did Mary know, Mary know, Mary know,

she had no Lamb at all.

Mary had a little lamb, a little lamb,

…a little lamb… as white as snow…
