Experimenting with cover art

Two words, cover art! If you are a writer and have dreamt of having your book published, then you’ve no doubt imagined what the cover will look like on your bestselling novel! We’ve all imagined it. No point in lying and playing coy.

I’ve definitely done so. I’m equally guilty of going to a book store, virtual or physical and judging a book by its cover. We all do it. Even though we’ve been told not to. It’s an ingrained habit that stretches beyond the world of words so let’s not drum ourselves down too much.

I’ve self-published two novels in the past few years and may have published a few more if life hadn’t got in the way, and by life I mean study and work. But now that I’m looking at the prospect of having more time on my hands this year, I want to do the things I’ve held off on, and those things include reading, writing, learning new skills and being content.

So, 2019 is off to a start and I’ve decided one of the new skills I’m going to teach my self will be the use of Photoshop. Why you ask? Well, I want to be able to make my own cover art for my novels, attempt crude concept posters for my scripts, and in general, feel good that I know something I didn’t last year. Hence, I’m off to a good start.

I’ve enrolled myself in a few Udemy courses to get the hang of the software, and then, it will be countless YouTube tutorials and practice until I get better at it or keep trying. And not to mention I’d love to be able to attach a concept/poster to the story posts I do here and elsewhere.

This is my first attempt at designing my own book cover using royalty free images, and it’s for a short story I’m writing on here called, Into the Woods.

What do you think?
